QUINCEAÑERA DRESS DESIGNER ERNESTO GONZALEZ MIGHT NOT BE A HOUSEHOLD NAME IN THE STATES, BUT IN GUATEMALA, HIS CASA DE MODAS FAZZ BRAND IS CAUSING QUITE A STIR.
During his almost thirty years in the fashion industry, hes dressed hundreds– if not thousands, of young girls looking for the Quinceañera dress that would commemorate their 15th birthday. “Its quite the occasion,” he shared with me during an interview for quinceaneragirls.com, “Theyre the protagonists of the event so its only fitting they wear a show-stopping dress.”
Gonzalezs Quinceañera designs recently caught our eye after a friend of mine sent us a photo of one of his latest designs.
Unlike most Quinceañera gowns, which are made from chiffon, organza or tulle, the Casa De Modas Fazz dress that intrigued us was made from a traditional Guatemalan fabric that was provided by the family of 15-year-old Daniela Valdez Muralles.
According to Gonzalez, the Quinceañera was born with a digestive disease and had to be fed through a plastic tube that ran through her nose, past her throat, and down into her stomach. Hoping for a miracle, her family prayed to Our Lady of Guadalupe for Daniela to be cured. Once cured, they promised to do a pilgrimage to their church for seven consecutive years in gratitude of the blessing.
Fifteen years later and healthier than ever, the young girl and her family turned to a local Guatemalan artisan for the fabric of her pilgrimage Quinceañera gown. Using a technique that was also used by her Maya ancestors over 1,200 years ago, the artisan interlaced brightly colored threads of purple, green, fuchsia and yellow to create the native textile.

The dress with the traditional fabric was made because of the spiritual value to the Quinceañera, for example. And the dress with LED lights was made to mirror Danielas vivacious charm. “She was beaming with personality,” he adds. “It was perfect for her.”
And theres also another design, one with large music notes hand drawn on the skirt, that Gonzalez mentions as being inspired by a Quinceañera. But that, my friends, is a story for another day.
